This course is intended for people with mixed levels of experience. The tutor will ensure that total beginners will get the instruction and support they need, and that those who are more advanced in the subject will be given tasks with more challenge.

● A practical course that encourages both beginners and more advanced learners to understand and practice the art of making clothes or accessories from commercial patterns. ● You will be introduced to the workings of the sewing machine. ● basic machine maintenance and troubleshoot faults. ● how to read and lay a pattern. ● Understand all the pattern markings and symbols associated with using patterns ● a range of construction techniques and design features required for shaping, fastening and finishing garments, clothing and accessories.

There will be no exams or qualifications, and the course will focus on creative activities. The tutor will use a combination of group demonstrations and one-to-one support. Everything will be provided for you to use in the first session. You will then need to provide your own fabric and, if you want to make something to a particular design, your own pattern to make your chosen garment or accessory. So that you can be successful in learning the subject, we do require that you arrive promptly for each lesson, and that you try not to miss any (you need to agree to attend at least 80% of the lessons). Lessons will be classroom based and supported by Google Classroom. This is our virtual learning space which will enhance your learning experience and will be used for resources, assessment, extra activities, homework, assignments, as well as to extend learning and support independent learning throughout the week. You will be able to access Google Classroom via your secure leicesterlearns account. For more information go to our FAQ page. You will be given an Individual Learning Plan on which you and the tutor will be able to chart your progress. In every lesson, you will be expected to comment briefly in writing on your learning, and your tutor will give you feedback and suggestions on ways in which you can improve.

If you would like to discuss any aspect of your learning, support needs or where to move on from here, the Learner Recruitment & Welfare Officer kbirks@leicesterlearns.ac.uk will be able to give advice on: Further learning, whether with Leicester Adult Education or elsewhere.
