This course is suitable for people who are wanting to expand their skill set in an existing business finance role, as well as people who are moving into accountancy or bookkeeping as a new career. Business owners and self-employed people will also benefit from this course to have better management of the business accounts using accounting software or to be able to understand and improve oversight of this task if it is undertaken by an external accountant or bookkeeper.

• Banking procedures • Principles of recording and processing financial transactions • Principles of VAT • Professional values and basic business legislation • Setting up accounting software to manage accounting information • Process routine payments and receipts using a computerised system • Maintaining and recording the cash book • Maintaining the journal.

This course is delivered by mixed methods including online taught sessions, remote independent work and with classroom sessions for exams and preparation. This will be explained to you on the introductory course you will also be enrolled onto if you are agreed entry to this course. You will study eight mandatory units organised across a knowledge unit and a skills unit. These units give you an excellent understanding of both the underpinning knowledge of double entry bookkeeping and computerised accounting software. This course provides you with a great proficiency of skills in bookkeeping and accounting.

You will need to have a minimum of Level 1 English skills - Functional skills or GCSE - and, ideally, a Maths qualification for entry onto this course. Everyone will be asked to complete a vocational initial assessment to confirm you are ready to join this course. You may also be required to demonstrate your English skills level by completing an additional English assessment if you do not have proof of your qualification. You will also need to have access to a computer (Windows or Mac) for the duration of this online course, onto which a trial version of the SAGE software can be downloaded.

After completing this course, you may wish to progress to the VTCT (Skills first) RQF Computerised Accounting for Business Level 3 Qualification. Depending on your existing skills and qualifications you may be ready for either a Level 2 or 3 Accountancy qualification if this is your career aim. A payroll course would be a valuable additional qualification to these qualifications as processing wages is not covered on this course. Leicester Adult Education are pleased to offer a free, impartial in-house careers service to support our learners making decisions around their future career goals and choices. We have physical and digital resources available to support you and face to face careers appointments with our qualified and experienced adviser, all of which are easily accessed once enrolled.
