Reading Literature in Latin

This course is for learners who have reached an advanced level of Latin study and already have some experience of reading literary texts in the language. It builds on last year’s equivalent course, supporting you as you continue to develop your skills in reading and analysing texts

This course is for learners who have reached an advanced level of Latin study and already have some experience of reading literary texts in the language. It builds on last year’s equivalent course, supporting you as you continue to develop your skills in reading and analysing texts. During the year we’ll combine the reading of short prose and verse passages from a range of authors with more extended study of a complete text and/or longer selections. We’ll also undertake a programme of grammar revision and explore wider topics, such as the historical and cultural background to the literature we’re reading, and the Latin origins of English words.

There will be no exams or qualifications, and the course will focus mainly on reading and discussing both the language and content of the main text we’re studying; this will enable you to develop your skills in dealing with extended passages of Latin, and will allow you to identify areas where we can work together to revise grammar and vocabulary; it will also help you deepen your understanding of the linguistic techniques Latin authors use to express their ideas. So that you can be successful in learning the language, we do require that you arrive promptly for each lesson, and that you try not to miss any. You need to agree to attend at least 80% of the lessons. You will be given an Individual Learning Plan on which you and the tutor will be able to chart your progress. In every lesson, you will be expected to comment briefly in writing on your learning, and your tutor will give you feedback and suggestions on ways in which you can improve.
