Intensive Italian for Beginners

This course is aimed at complete beginners or learners with a very basic knowledge of the Italian language who want to start from the very beginning. Lessons will cover simple but key aspects of the language in a variety of everyday situations to give you the foundation needed at this early stage. Learning takes place using a collaborative approach in which active practice and communication are vital.

You will learn some aspects of basic grammar e.g. masculine & feminine gender, sentence structure, formal & informal context and some verbs; learn key vocabulary and set-phrases in a variety of “survival” contexts e.g. shopping for food, asking for directions, ordering food and drinks at a bar; discuss some aspects of the Italian culture, and practise mainly your listening and speaking skills.

There will be no exams or qualifications. Whilst you will, predominantly, be using speaking and listening skills in class, it is also important to recognise and address the fact that reading and writing skills are also very important at this level. Reading and writing will be explored as part of weekly homework, via Google Classroom, which the tutor will mark and feed the results back to you. This will help you both to know what needs to be done to help you progress. Developing independent language skills will be important at this stage in order that you become proficient at studying on your own. Tutors will encourage you and make sure you have the appropriate skills to make it a positive experience. So that you can be successful in learning the language, we do require that you arrive promptly for each lesson, and that you agree to attend at least 80% of the lessons. You will be given an Individual Learning Plan on which you and the tutor will be able to chart your progress during the course. You will be expected to comment briefly in writing on your learning, and your tutor will give you feedback and suggestions on ways in which you can improve. Lessons will be classroom based and supported by Google Classroom. This is our virtual learning space which will enhance your learning experience and will be used for resources, extra activities, homework, assignments, as well as to extend learning and support independent learning throughout the week. You will be able to access Google Classroom via a secure leicesterlearns account. Additionally, you will be asked to complete a course evaluation survey to share your learning experience. This survey will be shared via Google classroom at the end of the course.

No entry requirements.

This course leads to a longer Italian language for beginners in the next academic year. Your tutor will be able to give your more information before the end on your course. You can also access free impartial careers Information, Advice, and Guidance (IAG) through the careers service at Leicester Adult Education.
