Learners must have previous experience with pottery, however, no previous experience of RAKU is required. This course is over subscribed, therefore to allow as many of our learners to experience this technique, only one RAKU course per learner can be booked per term. Please note that this one-day course doesn’t include creating your own pot. There will be a selection of pots to choose from on the day which will be created by the tutors. However, you are welcome to join one of our Pay as you Go Pottery Sessions to create your own pot to fire for this course. You will need to join the Pay as you Go Session a minimum of 2 weeks before the Raku course to allow your pot to fully dry out in time. Our Enrolment team will advise you on how to book onto one of these sessions.

On this one-day course, you will have a chance to try the exciting Japanese art of Raku pottery. This includes glazing and preparing a pot for firing. You will have a hands-on experience of firing in a Raku kiln. You will be able to take your pot away with you at the end of the session. The lesson will be classroom based and supported by Google Classroom. This is our virtual learning space which will enhance your learning experience and will be used for resources, assessment, as well as to extend learning and support independent learning.  You will be able to access Google Classroom via your secure leicesterlearns account. So that you can be successful in learning the subject, we do require that you arrive promptly.  You will be asked to contribute to a Learning Plan on which you and the tutor will be able to chart your progress. You will be expected to comment briefly in writing on your learning, and your tutor will give you feedback and suggestions on ways in which you can improve. Extra costs: Basic equipment will be provided for you to use on this one day session. There will be additional costs for tutor pots, glazing and firing. Please see our firing and clay cost sheets or ask your tutor for more information. Please do not wear open toe footwear and ensure legs and arms are covered for health and safety.

There will be no exams or qualifications, as the course will focus on creative activities. The Tutor will use a combination of group demonstrations and one-to-one support.
