This Level 3 course is for learners who already have a previous Level 2 qualification in Counselling and want to take the next step towards training to become a counsellor.

This qualification is intended for candidates who have already acquired a recognised qualification in counselling skills and want to: • Take the next step in training to become a counsellor • Learn more about counselling theory, ethics, and mental health • Wish to progress into training, be prepared for work as a professional counsellor in an agency setting. This qualification does not lead to employment. It is designed as a pre-practitioner training for professional counselling qualifications, but it could also lead to employment in a related field or for individuals who wish to acquire counselling skills for use in other work areas, e.g., nurses, social workers, teachers. Themes that are covered include counselling theories, ethics and diversity, and personal awareness.

This qualification is not suitable for those who are currently in a state of severe emotional difficulty and/or severe psychological distress. It is important to understand that the level of commitment on this course is high and so is the written element where you have to complete independent work and you will need to pass Level 3 to progress onto Level 4. Successful completion of the course will allow you to progress onto the Foundation Degrees in Counselling, Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling, or the Level 4 NVQ Diploma in Advice and Guidance. It can also be considered as an essential step in the process of becoming a fully qualified counselling practitioner.
