This introductory course is for learners who may, or may not, have any previous knowledge or skills and may be starting out on a new career path and want to see if this is right for them. The tutor will adapt the learning activities to suit all abilities and needs. This course will give you the opportunity to investigate the knowledge and skills needed to determine if progress onto an accredited level 2 course is suitable for you.

This non-qualification course aims to introduce you to a good foundation for awareness of mental health and wellbeing in everyday life and work along with some of the approaches that underpin the use of these skills. • What is meant by the terms ‘mental health’ and ‘wellbeing’ • Different mental health conditions and treatment • Finding support for people with mental health conditions • Looking after your own mental health and wellbeing.

The course is a one-day course where you will learn in a classroom through activities and discussions, together with other interested adults and supported by a qualified teacher. There are no exams or portfolio work on this course as it’s an introduction. Your learning will be assessed via the work you produce in the class. This will cover the knowledge aspect of the course and will involve you writing short passages. Your tutor will give you feedback at the end of the session and ways to improve for progression.

There are no specific entry requirements, but you should have an adequate level of English and Maths (minimum entry 3 or equivalent skills) to comprehend the verbal and written elements of the course. English and Maths qualifications will be required should you choose to progress onto qualification levels or gain employment, so you are encouraged to gain those qualifications before pursuing vocational qualifications.

Successful completion of the course can lead on to further study of mental health and wellbeing subjects at Level 2 or other courses relating to Adult Social Care. Whilst the qualification alone will not guarantee you employment, it will contribute, along with other qualifications, to your applications for jobs in any sector involving working with or supporting people who may be experiencing mental health issues. Leicester Adult Education are pleased to offer a free, impartial in-house careers service to support our learners to make decisions around their future career goals and choices. We have physical and digital resources available to support you and face to face careers appointments with our qualified and experienced adviser, all of which are easily accessed once enrolled.
