This Level 2 qualification is aimed at people who are looking to gain a solid foundation in the basics of accounting; whether you already work in a finance related role, have good foundation skills and a desire to succeed in the accounting sector or are self-employed and want a deeper understanding of the accounts for your business. You will be required to attend the introductory course for this qualification prior to commencing this course if you are not progressing directly from the level 1 course.

• Double entry bookkeeping to initial trial balance stage • Sales ledger and purchase ledger • An introduction to management accounting • Principles of bookkeeping controls • Working effectively in accountancy & finance • Principles of costing • The business environment.

This course will be taught in a classroom with a mixture of directed study and homework. As a student on any AAT course, you will be registered with the association. The course will consist of taught sessions covering the full range of units that make up each individual qualification. This opens a pathway of progression to higher level AAT courses such as the level 3 diploma or it can be stand alone. This is an accredited course and is industry recognised. At the end of each unit, you will be assessed via a computerised exam that will take place at the college. Exam fees are included in the course cost, but resit fees will be payable by you, except in the case of extenuating circumstances. This will be covered in the introductory course. To maximise success rates, exams will be scheduled by the tutor in negotiation with you.

The essential entry requirement is an English qualification at GCSE or level 1 functional skills. If you do not have proof of this qualification you will be required to undertake an English assessment to confirm your capability to complete the exam style assessments on this course. A maths qualification at this level is also desirable, and will be expected by many employers, so you may want to consider gaining this alongside or in advance of this course depending on your capacity for study. Essential digital skills are necessary, although learners in need of support can access free essential digital skills courses alongside or in advance of their AAT courses. Access to a computer (Windows or Mac) outside of class time is essential for homework completion. You will be expected to undertake a vocational initial assessment to make sure this is the right level course for you. This can be completed during the introductory course but attending the introduction will not guarantee you a place on this course without having been assessed.

The qualification will qualify you to apply for trainee or assistant roles in a range of finance positions. It will also provide you with the opportunity to study for the Level 3 Diploma in Accounting. Your tutor will discuss this with you. Leicester Adult Education are pleased to offer a free, impartial in-house careers service to support our learners making decisions around their future career goals and choices.
