The role of the service is to provide high quality learning support in line with the guidance set out in the Equalities Act 2010. Our aim is to ensure that all learners have the best learning experiences possible.

Additional Learning Support (ALS) is provided on a needs-assessed basis and may be identified for individuals or groups of learners.

Not all learners with additional needs may need support but, if you think you might, you will have an opportunity to discuss your needs at enrolment or at any point within your time with us.

You may be offered support if you identify with any of the following:

  • English or Maths support needs
  • Learners with learning difficulties (LLD)
  • Other learning differences (e.g. dyslexia, dyspraxia etc.)
  • Autism Spectrum
  • Mental health needs
  • Sensory support needs (e.g. hearing or visually impaired)
  • Physical support needs

Or, if you are:

  • Under 25 years of age with an Educational Health Care Plan (EHCP). These learners will have been identified at initial assessment and must speak to a LWRO before enrolling.
  • 18-19 years old. These learners will have been identified at initial assessment and must speak to a Learning Recruitment and Welfare Officer (LRWO) before enrolling.

If you are unsure if you need any additional support, please ask an enrolment advisor, your tutor or a LRWO or more information and guidance.

What happens next?

If you want to discuss your needs and/or ask for support with your learning:

  1. Either at enrolment, or during your course, you can declare a learning support need;
  1. You will then be offered the opportunity to meet with our Additional Learning Support Officer who will assess and agree with you the level of support required;
  1. This information is shared with your tutor to help them support your learning journey.

Examples of support that we can offer are:

  •  Physical adaptations, such as the loan of a Chrome book, resources printed on coloured paper, coloured overlays
  •  Exam access arrangements
  • In class individual or group support from one of our learning support assistants. They work alongside the tutor and under their direction can support you in various ways including, helping you to understand tasks, to read text, to structure any written work and to check your answers
