If you want to gain employment in a school but have no previous experience, this Level 1 courses will prepare you for job seeking these roles and to move onto Level 2 professional qualifications for specialist classroom support roles if this is your career goal. This qualification will enable you to develop basic knowledge needed when working in a school environment. It is suitable for learners thinking about working in a variety of roles in schools, including teaching assistants, learning support assistants, special needs assistants, lunchtime assistants, wrap-around care staff or admin staff.

• How schools are organised • Developing positive relationships with children, young people and colleagues • Health and safety in the school environment • Safeguarding policy and practice

There are no exams but you will be assessed on your portfolio of evidence created during the course. You do not need a placement to complete this course; however, you may find a voluntary placement if you wish. You will also be given a small amount of homework. This will cover the knowledge aspect of the course and will involve you writing short assignments. Your tutor will give you feedback on your work and suggest ways in which you can improve. This course can either be delivered in classroom or online, you will be told your options for this before enrolling on the course which suits you best.

You will also be required to complete an initial assessment before we confirm your place on this course to make sure the course is at the appropriate level for you at this time. You will need to show proof that you have English and maths qualifications at a minimum of Entry 3 (Functional Skills or GCSE) or that you are progressing towards gaining the higher Level qualifications you will need for employment in this sector. A full English assessment may be required if you do not have this evidence.

You can progress onto one of the following courses: • NCFE CACHE Level 2 Certificate in an Introduction to Early Years Education and Care (QCF) • NCFE CACHE Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (QCF). All these qualifications require you to have English and maths Functional Skills at level 1 or GCSE ( minimum grade D or 3) at least. Equally this qualification will be useful in supporting applications to many employment roles in school settings, such as office staff, lunchtime assistants, after-school club staff etc. Leicester Adult Education are pleased to offer a free, impartial in-house careers service to help all our learners to make decisions around their future career goals and choices. We have physical and digital resources available to support you and face to face careers appointments with our qualified and experienced adviser, all of which are easily accessed once enrolled.
