ESOL Level 1

Our ESOL Level 1 courses teach learners new skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing.

ESOL Level 1 courses teach learners how to:

  • Speak to different people in familiar and unfamiliar situations, such as: education, training, work and social roles.
  • Follow and understand the main ideas of a conversation, understand the explanations, ask questions, ask for more information, make comments, give their opinion, listen to others and compare options and offer different suggestions.
  • Develop their independence skills in reading and understanding different texts on a variety of topics and be able to find information from different texts such as: descriptive, instructional, explanatory and persuasive texts.
  • There will be opportunities to look at a variety of functional tasks like writing real-life texts, where you will clearly communicate information, ideas and opinions using different formats such as: forms, records, emails, letters, narratives, instructions, reports and explanations.
  • Increase knowledge of grammar, develop spelling strategies and memory techniques as well as independent learning and study skills.

People learn in different ways, so our tutors use a variety of activities. These include:

  • Group work
  • Pair work
  • Class discussions
  • Quizzes and games
  • Tests and assessments
  • Spelling strategies
  • Homework
  • Reading tasks
  • Grammar resources
  • Learning records

If learners require additional support or other ways of learning, tutors will be able to help with these as well.

This course can lead to our ESOL Level 2 courses, or progressing on to Functional Skills, GCSE, or other academic paths.
