It’s Never Too Late: Rambha’s Story
At 84, Rambha shares how enrolling on a Family Learning English course has helped her gain confidence, improve her English, and prove it’s never too late to learn.
Rambha is 84-years old and has lived in Leicester for 60 years, after moving from Kenya. She has loved living in Leicester, with the nice community and great range of shops.
Rambha spent her years running a busy household, caring for her husband and six children. With so much responsibility at home, she told us she never had time to learn English. In fact, Rambha had never attended school before.
Last year, Rambha’s husband sadly passed away. With gentle encouragement from her daughter, she decided it was time to do something for herself. Rambha enrolled onto our Family Learning English for Parents course, a decision that would open many new doors for her.
“The English lessons have helped me to gain confidence, I can understand, speak and write English better”
Rambha wanted to learn English so she could feel more confident when going to hospital appointments or speaking on the phone. She now attends classes at Belgrave Library and Rushey Mead Library with teachers that are “very nice and help a lot”. Rambha also praises the welcoming library staff who are friendly and welcoming.
“I enjoy my lessons, I enjoy being a student and learning. This is my time now, and it's important.”
After a lifetime of caring for others, we are immensely proud of Rambha for putting herself first. Her courage and determination to learn at 84 is truly inspiring and shows that it is never too late to start something new. We wish her all the best as she continues to learn with us!
