When Karen found herself with more time to pursue personal interests, she decided to enrol onto one of our adult learning courses to “try new things and revisit old interests”. Becoming an adult learner turned out to be the start of something much bigger than she expected.

Karen first enrolled on our Italian language course with the goal of communicating more confidently while travelling on holiday. While this goal was achieved, she soon discovered that the experience offered much more than just learning a language.

I’ve enjoyed using my brain in a different way to my working career and meeting new people. Our Italian group has now been together for almost three years, which has been lovely.”

Since then, Karen has challenged herself further by joining our Pottery and Sewing courses too. These courses have helped to rekindle her past interests from 40 years ago.

“I wanted to try these as I had always told myself I wasn’t artistic and so I wanted to test myself.”

The image at the top of the page is Karen with her beautiful piece she had featured in our learner art exhibition. Karen’s decision to challenge herself and step out of her comfort zone has certainly paid off, as we think she’s created some fantastic pieces! We’re glad this experience has increased her self-belief too, as she told us:

“It’s been wonderful to learn in a relaxed and supportive environment, and I’ve grown in confidence in my artistic abilities.”

The benefits have gone far beyond learning new creative skills. Karen highlights the positive impact on her wellbeing:

“The creative courses have allowed me to relax and just concentrate on being in the moment while creating something. It’s as much about the process as the end result, and our tutors make that process enjoyable and stress-free.”

She praises her tutors for their expertise and support, especially Luca, her Italian tutor. “They’ve been very knowledgeable, patient, and encouraging. Luca makes the lessons varied and enjoyable, which has kept me coming back year after year.”

Reflecting on her journey, it’s clear Karen has found a real passion for learning through adult education. What started as “just giving it a go for a year” has turned into four years of continued learning. The courses “sparked an ongoing interest”. Now, learning isn’t just something Karen tried, it’s something she looks forward to, as she continues to “explore, create, and enjoy learning.”

It’s a privilege to teach dedicated, open-minded learners like Karen and we hope her passion for learning continues to thrive as she learns new skills and creates beautiful pieces that continue to bring her joy.
