Supported to Succeed: Fahmida’s New Beginning
Fahmida shares how Family Learning courses have helped her gain confidence, improve her English, and follow her passion for working with children.
Fahmida moved to England in 2022 with her family, determined to support her 6-year-old son, who has additional needs. She also had the goal to build a career working with children. Fahmida found the change of culture and education a challenge, but she was motivated to help her and her son settle into their new life.
Fahmida’s English skills were quite basic, and she struggled to understand everything. Her son’s Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) teacher recommended one of our Family Learning English for Parents course and Fahmida enrolled. This course, and her ESOL class with another provider, was a life changing moment for Fahmida.
“The classes were so supportive and helped us to improve ourselves. It was nice to talk to other parents about sharing our concerns about our children and other worries”
The courses gave Fahmida the chance to develop her English, understand the UK education system, and gain the skills she needed to support her son and other children.
For Fahmida, the Family Learning course was more than just learning, they were “magical”. The classes were a space where she felt supported, believed in and empowered.
“My tutor always encouraged me, saying that I could achieve so much more. She gave me the confidence to believe in my abilities”
This encouragement from her tutors helped her believe in her abilities and inspired her to pursue her dream of working in a school. Since, Fahmida has enrolled onto Level 3 Supporting Teaching and Learning course at another adult college.
“I felt someone truly believed in me and pushed me to reach my full potential. The support I received gave me the confidence to follow my dreams.”
The courses have not only improved her English and professional skills but have also helped her family feel more confident and settled in their new home. Fahmida hopes that other parents will be inspired to take part in Family Learning courses, just as she was.
“As a parent who came from another country, learning about new cultures and languages was a scary time, but having the support around me meant the world to me.”
We’re so proud of Fahmida and admire her courage in facing change. Her dedication to learning, and her determination to support her family and follow her dreams is an inspiration to us all.
