Level 1 courses are for learners who do not have any experience or knowledge but would like to gain the knowledge needed before embarking on a higher-level course. Most learners will not have any previous knowledge of the subject, but this is not always the case, and the tutor will adapt the learning activities to suit all abilities and needs. This qualification will enable you to develop basic knowledge needed when working in a school environment. It is suitable for learners thinking about working in a variety of roles in schools, including teaching assistants, learning support assistants, special needs assistants, lunchtime assistants, wrap-around care staff or admin staff.

• How schools are organised • Developing positive relationships with children, young people and colleagues • Health and safety.

There are no exams as you are assessed on your portfolio of evidence. You do not need a placement to complete this course; however, you may find a voluntary placement if you wish. You will also be given a small amount of homework. This will cover the knowledge aspect of the course and will involve you writing assignments. Your tutor will give you feedback on your assignments and suggest ways in which you can improve. So that you can be successful in completing the course we do require that you arrive promptly for each lesson, and that you try not to miss any (you need to agree to attend at least 80% of the lessons). You will be given an Individual Learning Plan on which you and the tutor will be able to chart your progress. In every lesson, you will be expected to comment briefly in writing on your learning. This course can be offered as fully online.

You will need to show proof that you have English and maths qualifications at entry 3 (Functional Skills or GCSE). You will also be required to complete an initial assessment before we confirm your place on this course to make sure the course is at the appropriate level for you at this time.

You can progress onto one of the following courses: • NCFE CACHE Level 2 Certificate in an Introduction to Early Years Education and Care (QCF) • NCFE CACHE Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (QCF). Equally this qualification will be useful in supporting application to many employment roles in school settings, such as office staff, lunchtime assistants, after-school club staff etc. All these qualifications require you to have English and maths Functional Skills at level 1 or GCSE (minimum grade D or 3).
