The Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (RQF) is the nationally recognised 3-day qualification course which meets the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) requirements for first aiders in a place of work. You will need this qualification if you are a nominated first aider.

The course covers essential knowledge including the roles and responsibilities of the first aider; how to assess an incident and recognising signs, and symptoms of injury and illness. A practical teaching and assessment session will confirm your skills in: cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), use of automated external defibrillators (AED), auto-injecting devices and assisting a casualty who is suffering from major injury or illness.

This course is delivered by blended learning methods. You will complete the first part (knowledge) by self-directed e-learning, which will take you approximately one day to cover but can be done in your own time and convenience. You will need to complete this (with online verification) at least 24 hours before joining the second part of the course. The second part consists of two consecutive days of face-to-face practical skill development and assessment in a classroom with a teacher and full class group. During these days you will undertake the multiple choice exam to confirm the e-learning and you will spend the rest of the time developing your awareness of managing a first aid incident and practising the physical skills and actions.

During the assessment you will be required to demonstrate CPR and recovery position techniques for a minimum of 2 minutes each at floor level. You must be able to independently get down and remain sitting or kneeling for this time to complete the assessment for this award. It is also advised that learners are working at a minimum level of English skills equivalent to Level 1 in order to complete both the self-directed e-learning and the multiple-choice assessment at the end of the practical section. You will also need access to a suitable internet connected device (smartphone, tablet, laptop etc.) to complete the e-learning element - a link to the website for this will be sent once you are enrolled.

Successful candidates receive a Highfield Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (RQF) certificate, which is valid for three years. This may be required for your current role or could support your application for employment roles where this is viewed as either a desirable or mandatory qualification.
