English Level 1 (Functional Skills)

This course is designed to help you develop the essential English skills needed for everyday life, work and further education. Whether you are looking to gain confidence in your English abilities, support your child with their schoolwork, or progress to higher-level courses, this is the ideal programme for you.

You will improve your abilities in: • Spelling, punctuation, and grammar. • Speaking and listening in everyday situations. • Reading and understanding written texts. • Writing for different purposes such as formal emails and letters or blogs.

Our courses cover Level 1 and Level 2 English qualifications. You will complete an initial assessment to determine the most suitable starting point, ensuring the course meets your individual needs and goals. Choose between: • Twice-a-week courses: 4 hours weekly, allowing you to complete two levels of English in one academic year. Exams take place in February and June/July. • Once-a-week courses: 2 hours weekly, with exams primarily held in June/July. The course is delivered face-to-face, supported by online resources and activities. You will use platforms such as Google Classroom, Google Meet, and other websites to access additional materials. It is essential that you have access to a PC, laptop, or tablet with a stable internet connection. To succeed, you must: • Attend at least 80% of lessons • Arrive promptly for each session • Complete weekly homework The speaking and listening component includes discussions and a presentation, conducted online via Google Classroom and recorded for assessment. These will be scheduled outside of regular class times.

An initial assessment will determine the right level for you. There are no formal prerequisites, just a commitment to learning and improving your English skills.
