Heritage Crafts - Signwriting

This course is intended for beginners to Signwriting. It is not suitable for learners who are advanced in the subject, or who have previously studied Signwriting. This course is part of our Heritage crafts themed day which celebrates and highlights skills from our shared cultural history, preserving traditional artistry for the modern world.

You will learn the essential basics and "insider" techniques for creating eye-catching signs that add a personal touch to any space. We’ll delve into the history of the craft, drawing inspiration from artists in the trade. By the end of the session, you’ll have designed your own unique chalkboard, using paint pens, ready to take home or gift to someone special.

The lesson will be classroom based and supported by Google Classroom. This is our virtual learning space which will enhance your learning experience and will be used for resources, assessment, as well as to extend learning outside the classroom and to support independent learning. You will be able to access Google Classroom via your secure leicesterlearns account. You will be asked to contribute to a Learning Plan and the class Padlet on which you and the tutor will be able to chart your progress. You will be expected to contribute to discussions and comment in writing on your learning, and your tutor will give you feedback and suggestions on ways in which you can improve. So that you can be successful in learning the subject, we do require that you arrive promptly. Design board to take home and the use of paint pens have been included in the course cost price. You are welcome to bring your own art materials if you want to practice using more than the basic kit provided in class.

There will be no exams or qualifications, as the course will focus on creative activities. The Tutor will use a combination of group demonstrations and one-to-one support. To ensure fair access to our high-demand tailored learning courses and to better support your learning journey, we are moving to a termly enrolment cycle. This means you will now enrol for one term at a time. Your tutor will work with you during the term to identify the best progression route for your goals.
