Today is Safer Internet Day 2025!
The UK Safer Internet Centre celebrate each year by raising awareness of different online issues and themes. This year, they are focusing on ‘Too good to be true? Protecting yourself and others from scams online’. You can learn more about their theme, including accessing a range of great resources on UK Safer Internet Centres website.
At Leicester Adult Education, we offer a wide range of digital courses. We understand that navigating the online world and being safe whilst doing so can be quite intimidating. So, a lot of our courses, especially the ones for beginners, teaches our learners how to be safe online.
For complete beginners, we offer Let’s Get Digital courses. These sessions, which are funded by Public Health, aim to help learners feel more self-assured when using their smart devices to get online independently and safely. Learner's will also be taught how to access the NHS app and travel apps safely.

For slightly more advanced beginners, we have Digital Skills for Beginners and Digital Skills for All courses. You can explore all of these on our Computing and Digital Skills courses page.
We also run Digital Awareness courses as part of our Family Learning programme. Bubbly, our Lead Tutor from Family Learning delivers our Digital Awareness course to parents and carers in schools. For Safer Internet Day, we asked her to share her top tips to parents and carers for keeping their families safe online. Here’s what Bubbly said:
Top Tips for Parents to Keep Their Children Safe Online
Information from our Lead Tutor, shared in our Digital Awareness course.
1. Discuss Internet Safety as a Family and Set Family Rules
It's important to explore the internet together as a family. Have open conversations with your children about the benefits as well as the potential dangers online. Talk to them about what they should do if they experience online bullying and harassment or come across predators or extremist, violent or sexual content. Set clear rules, such as time limits for screen usage.
2. Set Up Devices in Shared Areas
Encourage your children to use their devices in shared spaces where you can easily monitor what they are doing. This helps you stay informed about their online activities.
3. Set Parental Controls
Many search engines offer parental control features that allow you to block certain websites, set screen time limits, approve downloads, enable safe search filters, and more.
4. Create Strong Passwords
It’s a good idea for you to create strong passwords for your children’s accounts and not to tell your children what the password is.
5. Teach Children the Importance of Privacy
Explain to your children why it’s important not to share personal information online, such as their full name, address, school name, or phone number.
6. Increase Your Own Awareness of Scams
Stay informed about common online scams, such as phishing emails and fake social media posts, and learn how to spot them. Regularly update your devices and software to ensure you have the latest security protections. Also, know how to contact your bank if you notice any suspicious transactions and know what information to tell the bank.
