The Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling supports the development and demonstration of skills, knowledge and understanding of Counselling, towards achieving professional status as a counselling practitioner. This is a two-year course. The course in year 1 will span 23 weeks in total. This may include some Saturday sessions

The aim of this qualification is to provide an opportunity to develop work-based skills within an ethical framework and develop an understanding of the impact of a diverse society on clients, counselling therapeutic theories, self-awareness, and research methodologies. You will develop a deep understanding of one therapeutic theory with knowledge of two others. The course involves a high degree of experiential learning and self-awareness exercises. There is a strong focus and emphasis on experiential learning developed through skills practice to include professional discussions and workshops. All learners are required to contribute to and successfully complete all requirements for all seven units of the full qualification.

This course requires all learners undertake a 100-hour supervised placement, a key component of this qualification. You will be fully supported by your course tutor in terms of securing an accessible placement. You will be required to allow additional study time in addition to the guided learning of 310 hours (GLH). GLH is part of the total qualification time of 600 hours (TQT). TQT includes all other time taken in preparation, study, or any other form of participation in education or training but not under the direct supervision of a tutor or supervisor. A strong disciplined approach and commitment to study is required at this level to include reading research articles and journals whilst presenting an academic standard of all work.

• Learners must have completed and passed the SEG ABC Awards Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Skills or an equivalent qualification. Evidence of certification will be requested. • Two written references • A 1,000-word piece of academic writing. The themes of which will be shared prior to interview. This is to evidence academic writing ability at a suitable level (for example level 3 or A level qualifications and English language at the equivalent of a GCSE grade 4 or C. • An interview will be conducted to ensure the suitability of all applicants to undertake this level 4 qualification. If you are 19+on 31 August 2023 and studying a Level 3, 4, 5 or 6 qualification, an Advanced Learner Loan may be available for this course. Additional costs for the course are: • Minimum 25 hrs personal counselling ranging from £30 to £50 depending on whether the counsellor gives trainee rates. • Supervision every 4 weeks (28 days) averaging 1 1/2 to 2 hours at about 30 to 50 pounds per hour. • CPD events. Prices vary incredibly. • Books but eBay may be the best to buy from. • Stationery • Membership to a professional body averaging £50 for the year • ICO data handler certification if handling confidential documents at home if working online for an agency. The full fee will apply if you are aged 19+ on 31 August 2023 and you do not meet the ESFA residency criteria or if there is no Government funding for this qualification.
