Level 2 courses are for learners who may, or may not, have any previous knowledge or skills and may be starting out on a new career path or may be refreshing their current knowledge and skills. Some learners may already have previous knowledge of the subject, but this is not always the case and the tutor will adapt the learning activities to suit all abilities and needs. This qualification will enable you to develop the knowledge and skills needed when supporting teaching and learning in the school environment. It is suitable for learners working in roles that support pupils’ learning, including teaching assistants, learning support assistants and special needs assistants.

The course includes: • Children and young people’s development • Safeguarding children and young people • Equality, diversity and inclusion • Developing positive relationships with children, young people and colleagues • Health and safety • Behaviour management • Working as part of a team • Children and young people’s play and leisure • Displaying children and young people’s work.

There are no exams as you are assessed on your portfolio of evidence. You will attend a class either face to face or online on a weekly basis, where you will be provided with the work and activities (online or printed resources) you will be expected to complete at home during the following week. You will need to arrange a placement, for at least 6 hours a week for the duration of the course, working with children in a school. You will be assigned an assessor who will observe you in your setting performing various duties. You will be given feedback on your performance. You will also be given regular homework. This will cover the knowledge aspect of the course and will involve you writing detailed assignments. Your tutor will give you feedback on your assignments and suggest ways in which you can improve. So that you can be successful in completing the course we do require that you arrive promptly for each lesson, and that you try not to miss any (you need to agree to attend at least 80% of the lessons). You will also need an enhanced DBS check. You will be given an Individual Learning Plan on which you and the tutor will be able to chart your progress. In every lesson, you will be expected to comment briefly in writing on your learning. Please speak to an Enrolment Advisor for information or advice about course fees.

You will need to show proof that you have English qualifications at minimum level 1 (Functional Skills or GCSE) and you should ideally be working towards level 2 in both English and Maths as this will be required for employment at the end of this vocationally qualifying course. You will also be asked to complete an initial assessment in order to confirm your current skill level to make sure the course is at the appropriate level for you.

This course will professionally qualify you for employment as a teaching assistant in school, however you will also need to have English and Maths qualifications at level 2 (e.g. GCSE A-C grade or Functional Skills) to gain employment in a majority of school settings. If you hold level 2 English and maths qualifications, you can progress to the NCFE CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Supporting Teaching and Learning after this course to allow you to apply for career progression roles at level 3. As a newly qualified level 2 teaching assistant, you can expect to earn a starting salary of £17,000. Leicester Adult Education are pleased to offer a free, impartial in-house careers service to support our learners to make decisions around their future career goals and choices. We have physical and digital resources available to support you and face to face careers appointments with our qualified and experienced adviser, all of which are easily accessed once enrolled.
