Sewing - Essential Skills

This is a practical course intended for people with no previous experience in sewing. This course is not for advanced learners, or learners who have previously enrolled on our Sewing - Develop & Explore courses (unless advised by Tutor) The tutor will ensure you will get all the instruction and support you need to learn the basics of hand sewing and sewing on a machine. Once you have completed a maximum of 3 sewing Essential skills courses you can progress onto our Sewing- for Beginners courses. This course is at our Bishopdale Adult Learning Hub. Please note, there is no cafe onsite at Bishopdale and limited amenities nearby. There is an onsite drinks machine for refreshments (card only).

Sewing isn't just about making clothes; it's about the freedom to repair what you love. You’ll learn the do's and don’ts of hand and machine sewing. You'll explore essential skills to tackle a basic project and the knowledge to fabric handle repairs.

The lesson will be classroom based and supported by Google Classroom. This is our virtual learning space which will enhance your learning experience and will be used for resources, assessment, as well as to extend learning outside the classroom and to support independent learning. You will be able to access Google Classroom via your secure leicesterlearns account. You will be asked to contribute to a Learning Plan and the class Padlet on which you and the tutor will be able to chart your progress. You will be expected to contribute to discussions and comment in writing on your learning, and your tutor will give you feedback and suggestions on ways in which you can improve. So that you can be successful in learning the subject, we do require that you arrive promptly and attend a minimum of 75% of the course. Failure to attend a minimum of 75% of the course, may result in you not achieving success or being withdrawn from the course. Calico, fabric scraps and thread have been included in the course cost price. You are welcome to bring your own art materials if you want to practice using more than the basic kit provided in class.

There will be no exams or qualifications, as the course will focus on creative activities. The Tutor will use a combination of group demonstrations and one-to-one support. To ensure fair access to our high-demand tailored learning courses and to better support your learning journey, we are moving to a termly enrolment cycle. This means you will now enrol for one term at a time. Your tutor will work with you during the term to identify the best progression route for your goals.
