From Class to Art Exhibition: Svetlana’s Sewing Story
Svetlana joined our Sewing for Beginners course to spend quality time with her daughter and rediscover her creativity. Along the way, she built new skills, friendships and confidence.
Her work was later selected to be used to promote our upcoming learner exhibition!
Svetlana joined our Sewing for Beginners course after being encouraged by her daughter to enrol together. Although she had done a little sewing before, she knew it would be a fun way to return to something creative while also spending quality time with her daughter. She was particularly looking forward to the course and shared:
“I wanted to have time for myself, do something creative and learn something new”
We’re very glad to hear that our courses met Svetlana’s expectations. She told us her favourite part of the course was having something to look forward to each week, as well as “learning about sewing, making friends and socialising”.
Alongside developing her practical sewing skills, Svetlana has found the course has supported her wellbeing, helping her to feel more connected and giving her a positive reason to get out and engage with others.
“It’s more than just sewing. I made friends, it helped me to get out of my house and socialise. I love it.”
Svetlana also praises her tutor, Molly, whose encouragement and support have helped her progress each week.
“Molly makes sure I understand the learning points and get engaged into work every week and make a progress. Molly is easy going and she makes it interesting for everyone.”
As part of her classes, Svetlana learned how to make the most of fabric scraps, one of her favourite things she was taught. One of these projects was creating an upcycled textile zipped pouch. We loved this piece so much that we chose it as the background for our exhibition promotional materials.
Svetlana says she is “very excited and happy” to be showcased as part of the exhibition.

We’re incredibly proud of everything Svetlana has achieved during her time with us. Her journey is a wonderful example of how adult learning can build confidence and open new creative opportunities. We’re delighted that she has allowed us to use her piece within our promotional materials.
