Katherine was a Nail Technician for 20 years, but her circumstances changed due to health reasons. Therefore, Katherine started a new, exciting, professional journey by joining our Business Administration course.
“I’m 40, so it was now or never.”
Katherine came along to one of our Skills for Work Thursday Initial Assessment sessions to see what was on offer. After discovering the courses that were suited to her and completing the assessments, Katherine enrolled onto our Level 2 Certificate in Principles of Business Administration course.
“This is the best college I have ever been to. The course is flexible, the time suits me because I have children. It’s only 1 day a week and I can catch up on extra work at home which is very manageable.”
In fact, Katherine has already been successful in receiving a full-time job offer from the NHS within their Business Administration team. Although, the job wasn’t quite right for Katherine due to commitments with her children, they’ve added her to list to be contacted once a part-time role becomes available. Well done, Katherine!
Katherine noted the big difference between being taught at school as a child to becoming an adult learner due to her “complete different mindset and focus”. Katherine also appreciates being taught in smaller groups with other friendly adult learners.
“It's been nice to meet other fellow students, we’ve build-up quite a good friendship. It’s built my confidence, including speaking in front of a group of people. At school, I couldn’t read a book out loud or do a presentation without being anxious.”
Katherine also praises her tutor, Heidi, who you can see above with one of Katherine's classmates. As well as “knowledgeable”, Katherine said Heidi is “open and approachable”. We asked Heidi to share some words about Katherine’s learning journey, and she said:
“It’s been a great pleasure to have Katherine attend my course. Katherine has overcome a few hurdles and her determination to keep going is inspiring. She is a friendly member of the class and is a pleasure to teach. I wish her the best for the future.”
We asked Katherine what she would say to someone who was hesitant about joining a course as an adult learner.
“Go for it, 100%. Follow what you want to do, it’s never too late.”
We think that is great advice! Thank you for sharing your story with us Katherine.
